On Monday, May 29 (Memorial Day), Hennepin County libraries are closed.
The Hennepin County Board of Commissioners approved a contract with Hammel Green and Abrahamson, Inc. (HGA) for architectural and engineering schematic design services for a new Brooklyn Park Library on Tuesday, November 27. If the County Board approves the project at the completion of this first phase of the design process in spring 2013, construction is estimated to begin in spring 2014 with a grand opening anticipated in the summer of 2015.
The new Brooklyn Park Library will be located near the intersection of 85th Avenue North and West Broadway on property purchased from North Hennepin Community College (NHCC). Access to the library will be provided by a new public roadway constructed through a cooperative agreement with the City of Brooklyn Park, NHCC and Hennepin County.
The new library, estimated to be about 38,000 gross square feet, will be more than twice as large as the current 15,000 square foot library. It will incorporate the themes recommended by the Brooklyn Park Library Task Force: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), world culture and geography. The library collection will grow and the number of public computers will increase in the new library. Comfortable reading lounges, study areas for students of all ages, and gathering spaces for the Brooklyn Park community will create an inviting environment.
Brooklyn Park Community Advisory Committee meetings will be scheduled in winter, 2013 to provide input on the concepts developed during schematic design.
The current Brooklyn Park Library will continue to serve the community during the planning process and construction. Shortly before the grand opening in 2015, the library on Zane Avenue North will close to prepare for the move to the new library. More information about the transition will be available as the project progresses.
