At a community meeting on Thursday, Aug. 4, at Van Cleve Recreation Center in Minneapolis, Hennepin County Library Director Lois Langer Thompson announced Hennepin County Library – Southeast will remain at its current location at 1222 4th St. S.E. and will undergo a major renovation.
Hennepin County Commissioner Peter McLaughlin talked about the change in the project’s direction. In 2008, a recommendation was made not to use the current building for future library services. Following a 2013 building assessment and a 2014 community engagement process, the building’s location and spaces were re-evaluated. The current building’s potential to respond to community-identified needs prompted the decision to renovate the library to become a 21st-century library.
The next step for the project will be the selection of an architect. The Designer Selection Committee, a County citizen advisory board, will issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) in August. Proposal review and architect interviews will follow, with a recommendation to the County Board this fall.
