History Day Projects Teen Subject Guide
The National History Day competition has become a major academic focus in many Minnesota schools.  Minneapolis libraries piloted a program series called History Day Hullabaloo to promote use of library resources, and to connect students with University of Minnesota project counselors and with staff from the Minnesota Historical Society who coordinate the competition on the state level.

This successful program series has an online component as well.  On the TeenLinks website's Do Your Homework page, a subject guide called History Day Projects exists to index major online resources for students and to help them find support and information for competing in National History Day.

Discover ELSIE
ELSIE is a database of over 500 picture books, selected to help children develop the early literacy skills necessary for learning success.  Librarians at Hennepin County Library select ELSIE books and include presentation notes showing how to emphasize skills in  fun, interactive story sharing. You can search ELSIE by keyword and/or by early literacy skills. Newest titles appear first, so check ELSIE regularly.   An RSS feed is available.  ELSIE is part of the Birth to Six website.

    Public Web Resources
    • ELSIE: Early Literacy Storytime Ideas Exchange – Search ELSIE to find books that help children develop the early literacy skills necessary for learning success. Presentation notes show how to emphasize skills in a fun, interactive story sharing experience. ELSIE is regularly updated by Youth Services librarians.

    • HCL on MySpace – Here's how we created our MySpace profile. You can access HCL's collection through this portal, subscribe to a blog featuring library events and items of interest, and find new friends such as library fans, authors, and other library systems.

    • Book Club Kits – Hennepin County Library Web Services staff developed an online reservation system, allowing library card holders to check available dates for a kit title, place a reserve and choose a pick-up location for the kit. Kits include 8-10 copies of the book, discussion questions, and tips for a successful book group.

    • Fugitive Fact File – compiled by Hennepin County Library staff from files maintained at branches throughout the Library system, all of the data and resources collected here have been used by library staff to answer reference questions. The file is updated continuously as new information is obtained.

    • Subject Guides – subscription databases, selected Web sites, links into the Library Catalog, librarian notes, library events, and other resources we feel will be of particular interest to Hennepin County Library users.

    Reports

    • Collection Handling Action Team Report – In January 2003 senior library management began to explore the idea of cost containment savings through an investigation of collection management models.
