POLICY
The library supports school programs/projects whenever possible through library materials and services. The size and composition of the materials collection at an individual library is determined by budget, building size, circulation and use patterns; it is not determined by school program/project booklists. Expectations should not be created that because something is on a school list it can be found on the shelves of a particular library. Materials on school program/project lists should not be labeled in any manner nor should they be segregated from the rest of the collection.
Agency guidelines for library support of school programs/projects:
- Initiate contact with the program coordinator to discuss the level of service and materials the agency can provide. When more than one agency is involved, the agency closest to or in the school district should assume responsibility for the initial orientation with the cooperation of other affected agencies.
- Invite program coordinator, teachers, and volunteers to the agency for an orientation, which should be attended by the agency manager as well as the youth services librarian. The orientation should include:
·
distribution of appropriate printed information about the agency and the library system
·
description of the size and scope of the collection
·
how to find materials in the library
·
how to check out and renew materials
- When helping volunteers/parents/students find and reserve materials, staff should use common sense as to the amount of time spent with the person
- Materials used by any school program/project will be integrated into the regular collection and will not be marked or labeled in any way.
- Some bibliographies used in school programs, e.g., Book Nook, are copyrighted and should not be copied for library or personal use without permission.
