POLICY

The Hennepin County Board of Commissioners adopted Resolution 00-7-433R3 which established a Smoke Free Policy for county staff to safeguard the health of employees and the public, reduce the risk of legal exposure and improve the appearance of entrances.

County employees and the general public are restricted from smoking within a 15-yard radius (or 45 feet) of street level entrances to county-owned buildings. This includes any ground/street level entrance that staff, clients and customers use to enter and/or exit the building.

The entire area on Sixth Street underneath the Government Center and the area at the Hennepin County Medical Center between Park and Chicago Avenues on Seventh Street are also designated smoke-free zones.

Employees are prohibited from smoking during the performance of job duties, including when using county vehicles except during lunch breaks and rest periods, and in their own vehicles or while working at home, if they are not in the presence of a county client.

Signage has been installed in county facilities identifying the smoke-free zones. For questions pertaining to the smoke-free zones, please contact the designated Building Manager assigned to the building in which you work.
