The New Walker Library Is Open!
Here are photos of Saturday's opening event, which included remarks, a ribbon-cutting and music. On opening day, patrons checked out 2,856 items, 84 new library cards were issued, and computer sessions totaled 205. The library's new hours: Mon., Wed. 12-8 p.m.; Tues., Thurs., Fri., Sat. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. More info.

Discover Somali Children's Books
The Library has a growing collection of materials in Somali. The collection contains children's books by local authors: "Wiil Waal" by Kathleen Moriarty; "The Lion's Share" by Said Salah Ahmed; and "The Travels of Igal Shidad" by Kelly Dupre. More children's books in Somali.

New Library Board Officers Elected
The Hennepin County Library Board unanimously elected a new slate of officers at their annual meeting on April 23. Gary Thaden of Minneapolis is now president; Chris Damsgard of Brooklyn Park is vice president; and Sandy Johnson of St. Louis Park is secretary. All officers are elected to a one-year term.

New Walker Library Now Open
The new library at 2880 Hennepin Avenue in Minneapolis opened with a celebration on Saturday, April 26. Remarks at 9 a.m., ribbon-cutting at 9:30 a.m., music from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and activities throughout the day. Expanded hours will be: Mon., Wed. 12-8 p.m.; Tues., Thurs., Fri., Sat. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. More info.

Medical History Exhibit at Minneapolis Central Library
Hennepin Medical History Center tells the story of 20 patients, nurses, doctors and other staff by examining the contents of their bags in "Unpacked: Suitcases, Briefcases and Bags From Hennepin County Hospital." Open now through June 3 at Cargill Hall Gallery. More info.

Raising Awareness: Children's Mental Health
"Fidgety Fairy Tales – The Mental Health Musical" is a fun, family-friendly show that reduces fear and misunderstanding around common mental health disorders. Talented young actors use music and gentle humor in re-imagined tales addressing depression, autism and brain damage. Presented at various libraries this spring.

"Home Street Home" Performance at Minneapolis Central
This play about having a home and experiencing homelessness will be performed Saturday, April 12, 1 p.m. at Minneapolis Central Library. The play was created by its actors, most of whom have faced homelessness. The Library received a grant from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota Foundation to enhance services to homeless individuals.

Paws to Read With an Animal
Volunteers will help put young readers at ease so they can cuddle up with a certified therapy animal and practice reading aloud. Most libraries host dogs; you can call ahead to see if other animals will be visiting. More info.
