by Capote, Truman, 1924-1984 The strength of a town when it faces a real life horror story. No one in my family was allowed to read the story since my great-grandmother was friends of the family in Kansas. Very graphic and sad, but wonderfully written by a caring author. posted May 27, 2009 at 2:26PM

by Ellison, Ralph Read this in high school, so I was shown the subtle symbolism and artistic style. May be worth reading the cliff-notes along with it. posted May 27, 2009 at 2:23PM

by Jacobs, Harriet A. 1813-1897. A moving account of the strength of the author. Shows slavery and life at the time from every angle. posted May 27, 2009 at 2:21PM

by Charriere, Henri, 1906-1973 I've read this book three times already. There's a sequel, Banco, by the same author. Not as good as the first but definitely worth reading if you are left wanting more after Papillon. posted May 27, 2009 at 2:20PM
