by Kornfield, Jack If you are troubled, tormented, or simply feel unfulfilled and empty, perhaps it is time to look at spiritual guides. And if you are looking for serenity (not fire and brimstone sermons), this book is for you. Jack Kornfield is non-judgmental and unassuming in his approach to the understanding of the spirit. posted Mar 4, 2008 at 5:56PM

by Hamilton, Edith Practically a sine-qua-non for mythology fans. Very educational, and very entertaining. You can pick the book and start reading from any page and still enjoy and learn. posted Mar 4, 2008 at 5:38PM

by Malcolm X Very powerful!! Malcolm X bared his life story with no reservations and with defiance. He lashed out at "White America" and its self-serving laws and culture for oppressing and systematically diminishing blacks. Yet, his wrath was also directed at blacks for acquiescing in their own oppression. The book is still a shocker and a revelation to all! posted Mar 4, 2008 at 5:05PM

by John Steinbeck Exquisitely written! A very moving and gut-wrenching story about a man and his family as they go through love, antipathy, despair, and almost total implosion. We learn about the power of love and forgiveness. Above all, we learn that nothing about life is predestined. We are free to choose our paths in life. Hope that is not too preachy! posted Mar 4, 2008 at 4:30PM

by Larry McMurtry A great book! Quintessentially American with humor, grit, and epic grandeur. You will be hooked from the beginning when you meet Gus berating his little pigs and the story takes off. Larry McMurtry’s characters (both male and female) are as real as can be and their travails become your travails in the torturous trek from dusty Lonesome Dove to Montana. I agree with Priscilla, this is an "essential read!" posted Mar 3, 2008 at 2:08PM

by Forsyth, Frederick Oh ho ho!! We are after the Jackal here. "Le Chacal", as the French called him, was a mysterious and deadly assassin-for-hire who, it is said, did his work in the 1960’s. Here, the suspenseful story deals with the attempt to stop him from succeeding in his most ambitious and nefarious mission to-date at the time. Frederick Forsyth’s books always crackle with suspense. This is one of his greatest works. Also, catch the movie (the original from 1973) if you can after you’ve read this book. You will be highly rewarded for the experience! posted Mar 3, 2008 at 1:29PM

by Jones, James Reading this book, the first thing you will notice is the intensity and intactness of the characters. They come out real and vivid in your mind’s eye. You find humor, passion, rugged individualism (a true American trait), tenderness, and pathos. One central theme of the book is the idea that it is the things we love most that cause our demise. Great, great book!!!! posted Mar 3, 2008 at 1:07PM

by Condon, Richard. This is a timeless classic. Richard Condon is very effective with this scary tale of psychological manipulations (a.k.a brainwashing) and political conspiracies. You can’t help comparing this book to George Orwell’s "1984". I highly recommend this book for its originality if for nothing else. posted Nov 7, 2007 at 5:29PM
