Reading Interests: Mystery and science fiction/fantasy; the evil characters must be evil and the good ones good. No noir, no gratuitous sex/violence, no crimes against kids, no long flowing auburn hair. Also getting tired of dystopia.

Cover ArtShouting won’t help : why I - and 50 million other Americans - can’t hear you
by Katherine Bouton
I had heard a review of this book on NPR and it sounded great - but I found it not as good as I expected. This is the account of a New York business woman who suddenly went deaf - first n one ear and later in the other. She provides Interesting info on the various physical and emotional aspects of deafness and the hearing treatments and technologies available today. Emphasis on how expensive everything is – one amazing fact is that though hearing evaluation of newborns is mandatory, there is no funding for treatment of deaf children. I found the author rather off-putting – irritable (which is certainly understandable) classist, judgmental and vain. A worthwhile but sometimes annoying read.   posted Nov 3, 2013 at 10:42AM

Cover ArtThe ocean at the end of the lane
by Gaiman, Neil
Man comes back to his childhood home and begins to recall a nightmarish, magical adventure he’d had at the age of seven. The characters are well drawn and the plot is compelling. The boy’s unsophisticated struggle with whom to trust and how to make sense of suddenly dangerous adult behavior are heart-wrenching. An excellent read.   posted Aug 3, 2013 at 2:55PM

Cover ArtA turn of light : Marrowdell
by Czerneda, Julie
I have read and loved Czernada’s other series and so I was really looking forward to a new one. What a disappointment! I read a little and wondered, I read a little more and doubted, then I looked at the Amazon reviews and saw several people who were Czernada fans couldn’t finish this either. Fair warning, I only got through the first 30 pages before giving up. I don’t know what the plot is, but the characters are boring and the descriptions of scenery are interminable. I’m guessing a reader who likes the romance end of the fantasy spectrum might find this good. Her other books are science fiction and that’s what I like.   posted Jul 21, 2013 at 9:29PM

Cover ArtThe perfect ghost
by Barnes, Linda.
This is a stand-alone mystery in which a withdrawn and nervous ghost writer must take over a project when her partner is killed. As she forces herself out into the world to interview the famous actor and director who is her subject, she becomes stronger, more confident, less prone to panic attacks. Word reaches her that the police think her partner was murdered - at the same time she begins to suspect skeletons in the closet of her famous subject and his family. This is a well-plotted, slow-moving novel with competently drawn but somehow unlikable characters, beautifully described scenery and no humor whatsoever. It has a cunningly foreshadowed ending which is the best part of the book. For me, it was good enough to keep reading, but my recommendation is only luke-warm.   posted May 9, 2013 at 12:18PM

Cover ArtHard rain
by Eisler, Barry.
Excellent writing and interesting stuff about today’s Japan. Hero is stone killer who sometimes works with Japanese police or US CIA; his character is tempered with unconvincing moments of angst. Extreme violence and explicit sex: not my cup of tea.   posted Mar 9, 2013 at 9:29AM
