Joan Didion laid out her heart and soul baring her innermost thoughts and feelings about the death of her husband and illness of her only child. This is a heart wrenching and beautifully written book that affected me deeply.

"Life changes in the instant. The ordinary instant." Joan Didion's husband, the writer John Gregory Dunne, died of a heart attack, just after they had returned from the hospital where their only child, Quintana, was lying in a coma. This book is a memoir of Dunne's death, Quintana's illness, and Didion's efforts to make sense of a time when nothing makes sense. I found this book profound in its description of death, grief and ultimately love. At times a little detached, but definitely a compelling read. 4.5 out of 5.
