A group of Tokyo college students form the club Genshiken, an abbreviation for Society for the Study of Visual Culture. Much of their attention is given to Kujibiki Unbalance, an imaginary manga/anime. A closely observed story of otaku friendships and fascinations, and good enough that the publisher later brought KujiUn to life, too.
