I'm not much of a mystery reader, but I thoroughly enjoyed this nasty little piece of hard-boiled detective work. The story is full of funny descriptions of mean people in a mean town, and is only mildly grisly. It reminded me of Motherless Brooklyn by Jonathan Lethem (narrator is a complete wreck and hilarious) or The Poet by Michael Connelly (hard boiled mystery as told through the eyes of a reporter, and also very creepy.) My only complaint is that the characters are a little two-dimensional, but this IS the author's first novel.

It does not matter that characters are little but the story should be effective ------------ sensmith

I read the author’s recent novel "Gone girl" and like many others went back to read her earlier books. Now I’m sure. Gillian Flynn has a sick, twisted imagination (at least I hope none of this is from experience). I can’t write about the plot of this novel without revealing too much. All I can say is there are a lot of messed up people in this book including the narrator (the sharpest “object” in the story). Next up: Dark places.
