Having grown up Catholic, I’d often heard references to Flannery O’Connor as the best American Catholic author. But, past attempts to reader never went far. I don’t know why; I believe her emphasis on loss, grief, and depression did not make sense to me. Recently I tried again and found a deep connection with the sense of personal loss in her stories and her amazing way with words. If you can’t appreciate her now, put the book away for a few years; she may grow on you.
