Patron captures the tidal emotions of a young girl’s struggle between loss and belonging. Imagery-rich writing and a strong voice add depth to Lucky’s perspective on her town, her family, her friends, and herself. Heavy-handed Secular Humanism dogma weighs the novel down, though, transforming what would be an epiphanic story into glorified text-book fodder.
