On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through: the sacrifices Denny has made to succeed as a race car driver; the unexpected loss of Denny's wife; the three-year custody battle with his in-laws over their daughter, Zoe. What is different about Enzo is that he is a dog with the soul of a human. His goal is to become a human in his next life (based on a Tibetian myth) based on his what he has learned in this life. And he has learned plenty—about being a compassionate soul, how our mood effects our environment, about seeking joy and many other lessons. I loved this book. I kept thinking about Enzo and his journey for days after finishing this novel. A 4.5 out of 5 stars.

One of the best novels I’ve read in a long time. Perfect for dog lovers, or anyone who loves an emotional, triumphant story.

The story of a race car driver, his wife, and child, is narrated by the family dog, Enzo, who has a very interesting perspective.

Enzo is a dog who regrets that his tongue is too long and flat to form words. He is also quite annoyed that the monkeys got the opposable thumbs. Despite his deficiencies, he figures out a way to tell the touching story of his owner's custody battle for his daughter. This book has it all: love, loss, car racing, and a talking dog. It is a very satisfying read with a great ending. The audio version is excellent as well.

"Outside of a dog,a book is man's best friend> Inside is too dark to read" G. Marxs. This is never so true as the story Enzo & his owner. A truly heart-felt story of lost, love and coming to terms with your own humanity ( 2 & 4 legged).

This novel, told from the point of view of a sensitive, philosophical dog named Enzo, surprised those of us turned off by the idea of a canine narrator--we loved it. A crowd-pleaser for sure, and a simple but not shallow read.
