While hustling back to his office Steve Lopez stumbles across Nathaniel Ayers, a homeless African American man coaxing beautiful music from a two-stringed violin. Over the next few days Lopez discovers that Ayers had been a promising string bass player who attended Julliard in the early 1970s.
