If you read the Amazon customer reviews on this you will find people sharply divided in their opinions. I myself came away from the beautifully atmospheric and sad novel thinking that over all it was excellent. Some said it could’ve used more editing, but not a lot more... there were a few things I felt didn’t further the story line. I loved the Wisconsin setting, north yet of where I grew up, in almost the same era. Though long, I feel this novel bears reading twice because it has many more layers, allegories and meanings than I was able to get in the first reading.

Vivid imagery and symbolism abound in this many layered novel. On the surface it’s about a family who breed their own dog breed named after them and their family relationships that includes betrayal and murder. Underneath there’s tons to interpret and there are a few unforgettable scenes. Long, but moved along quickly.

As many have already commented, this is a long read - but overall worth the effort. Some beautiful prose, amazing imagery and an effective approach about the inner workings of dogs. I also agree that it could have used some editing, not much, but where parts didn’t help move the story forward or just too much meandering in certain places. And most importantly, I unfortunately have mixed feelings about the rather unsatisfying ending and am left with some unanswered questions. And yet still, I have to recommend it with some of these stated reservations.

No one has commented about the wonderful relationships between the Sawtelles and their dogs. If you have ever tried to train a dog, what these dogs learn will amaze you and perhaps teach you.

A retelling of Hamlet, set in rural Wisconsin. A very beautiful story.
