Excellent human drama about a lonely widower and a young immigrant couple, and the friendship they forge. Tom McCarthy also wrote and directed the Station Agent.

Kim B is right. An excellent tragedy regarding friendship. 9 of 10 stars only because I prefer happier endings.

I’d never even heard of this film before I saw it on the library shelf and was interested in the topic. The acting is excellent, and the story moving and timely--in which an older white economics professor who specializes in globalization and development finds himself involved with a young couple here in the U.S. illegally who change his life. The tie-in with events in Syria, while a minor theme overall, makes the ending especially poignant for the viewer.
