The story alternates between the story of a young Jewish girl in 1940s France and a middle aged American-French woman in modern day France. The story of the young Jewish girl is good, but short. However, I found the story of the middle aged woman in modern day (which was much longer) to be somewhat trite and predictable. I also thought that, like many books dealing with WWII Europe, it was rather simplistic and preachy. An alright book, but not fantastic.

Very enjoyable and enlightening book. The most important thing about this book is telling the story of the Vel d’hiv roundup and subsequent murders of thousands of French Jews in 1942. Although ordered by the Nazi occupying force, the action was carried out by the French police none of whom were ever tried for their actions.

A deeply touching and thoughtful tale about the value of history and human life, especially when it involves the value that people assign to other people! I give it 5 stars!
