An excellent history of the late 1990s Congo war. Although a very dense and slow read (I highly recommend detailed maps of Zaire (DRC) and Africa), Prunier assures the reader throughout that an explicit analyzation of the situation is far more truthful than the usual generalizations that take place in historiography. He does a commendable job at incorporating the war into the larger scheme of events which include the Rwanda genocide, foreign oil/mineral interests, and other geopolitical conflicts in Africa. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to really understand the most underreported tragedy of the past half-century or anyone simply wishing to understand conflict in Africa.
