Critically-praised, and I can see why. Take a compelling, true story about standing up to the Nazis and put it into the hands of a gifted novelist and you get exceptional, important art. Rich characters, compelling narrative, moves swiftly. The theme of how oppressive times can bring out the absolute best and worst in people is so well told in this timeless story.
