A friend of mine was looking in a card catalogue (this was about 25 years ago) for Jerzy Kozinski and ran across Kotzwinkle by accident. He got the book on the card –Elephant Bangs Train, a collection of short stories he really liked. He turned me on to it and in the next ten years we read all the Kotzwinkle we could find. (I remember Fan Man, Night Book, Swimmer in the Secret Sea, Fata Morgana, Christmas at Fontaines and I could probably Google a few more.) Doctor Rat was really great. Kotzwinkle remains one of my all time favorite authors. He is intelligent and compassionate and has an especially ingenuous sense of humor.
