From Library Journal:

This is the first biography of Rich (1903-91), a "wilderness writer" who wrote of life in the backwoods of Maine. Not nearly as well known as her relative, the prolific Emily Dickinson, Rich began her writing career from financial need. Her first book, We Took to the Woods (1942), was a best seller and was followed by several other books, also instantly popular and translated into various languages. Most of her works are heavily autobiographical, portraying a deceivingly simple life in remote western Maine and a love of humanity. Like her subject, Arlen is a registered Maine Guide, and she was researching her book on traditional sporting camps in Maine when she first became acquainted with the author. Using information gathered from interviews with Rich's son, daughter, and friends, as well as Rich's scrapbook, writing journal, and diary, Arlen artfully orchestrates the portrayal of Rich's life while remaining in the background. Almost half of the book consists of selected writings by Rich, some abridged and some unpublished, as well as her notes in preparation for new stories. Of primary interest to readers with connections and/or interest in New England and in wilderness life, this book is recommended for public libraries and academic libraries with collections in regional literature, contemporary "pioneer" living, and literature by women.
