Great story that taught me something about life as a slave on a southern plantation. This story was about a young girl and her apprenticeship with a healer, who used plants and wisdom passed down from her ancestors. An amazing story of the strength of family bonds that supersedes the hardships of life. Julie

Polly Shine is a strong, charismatic slave healer on a plantation in the pre-Civil War South who takes a reluctant girl named Granada in her care. Years later, Granada remembers how Polly taught her to heal others when she finds herself in charge of a motherless girl. This novel is beautiful written and inspired by true-life events.
