Smiley's people
Le Carre, John
Adult Fiction LE CARR
From Library Journal:
The most salient point about this fine audiobook, in which Cold War veteran George Smiley is lured out of retirement, is that the reader, Michael Jayston, seems to have watched or rather listened closely to the television production featuring Alec Guinness. Jayston imitates Guinness's voice to good effect, pulling back just short of caricature. On the other hand, the Hungarian accent of Tony Esterhazy, Smiley's left-hand man, does become a caricature, but a very amusing and appropriate one. The result of this piggybacking is not just a comfortable sense of familiarity but the augmentation of the already strong tendency of the audiobook to call forth a vibrant visual image. In this case, the images of the TV version, at least for those who have seen it, become omnipresent in the mind of the listener. For all mystery collections.(c) Copyright 2010.
