An Na writes a compelling book about a young Japanese immigrant, and her family, that settles in America's west coast. She is expecting America to be heaven (said her grandmother), but what she finds is different. As she grows, she learns what is accepted by American culture through school and a friend. This friend is not a good influence according to her violent father. Her father, turned into a nasty beast after he arrived to America. He beats her, and her mother, mocks her brother, and comes home late after drinking all night long. Will her family survive in this land that has changed them all? This book is one that many will enjoy. It talks about how some immigrant families are affected after immigrating to America, especially with Japanese heritage. There are lots of blank spots, but it doesn't really affect the big picture. This story is short and sweet for anyone that wants to leave their familiar house setting and enter someone else's.
