I personally thought that this book was excellent after the first half. DuPrau did not have a strong start, but the strong finish made up nicely for the weaker half.

The lights flicker, die, and come back on. What woould you do if you were 12 year old Lina Mayfleet or Doon Harrow? Would you stay with the people of Ember and explain everything and maybe even be put in Juvinile, or travel the river with Lina's sister and give them a message which explains everything. This book is exciting and thrilling explains adventures Lina and Doon go on.
