I (a minister’s son, and also a father) started reading this novel knowing nothing about the author, not even gender. The voice of the protaganist was so authentic I started to wonder if the book was autobiographical. I was completely surprised when, about 50 pages into the book, I looked at the cover and read the jacket notes to find a woman had written this mesmerizing book. The Pulitzer jury and board made an excellent choice in awarding their prize to this novel.

When I read this novel over the summer, I fell in the love with the author. I had to go out and read her other book, Housekeeping, which was more of an adolescent friendly novel. I would recommend Housekeeping to anyone, the metaphors are beautiful. I have also read parts of Death of Adam, and that is more nonfiction. Actually, the author is coming to talk at my college on Oct. 11, which is really exciting.

A simple story beautifully written. Along with its companion piece, Home, one of my all-time favorites.
