(1998) 71% (%) 9) PAID NYT Critics' Pick http://movies.nytimes.com/movie/review?res=9407E3D8163FF936A35750C0A96F958260 * * * * "See my profile for the key to this code" * * * * SYNOPSIS: "British writer Guy Ritchie made his feature directorial debut with this crime-caper comedy-drama set in London's East End. A streetwise charmer who loses his friends' money in a rigged game comes up with a plan to make everything come out right, but ends up in a comedy of errors." CONSENSUS: "With a big debt to "The Usual Suspects" and "Reservoir Dogs", like the approach to population control, Mr. Ritchie revels in the sheer knottiness of scheming. He makes it lively while it lasts and empty when it's over." MOTIVATION FOR ME TO SEE: I like well-made British gangster movies (like "Mona Lisa" (1986) with Bob Hoskins and Robbie Coltrane), and since this title kept coming up in reviews of other similar films I've since seen ("Sexy Beast" (2000), "Eastern Promises" (2007), I decided to request it.
