They live in the Connecticut suburbs with two young children. Frank commutes to New York City where he works in an office job that he hates. One he places little effort at, but he has yet to figure out what his passion in life is. April is a housewife who forgoes her dream of being an actress. They are not happy. One day, April suggests that they move to Paris as a means to rejuvenate their life. Initially skeptical, Frank ultimately agrees to April's plan. When circumstances change around the Wheelers, April decides she will do whatever she has to to get herself out of her unhappy existence." CONSENSUS: "While the theme of 'what are you doing with your life?' resonates, it's not much fun to watch, in spite of splendid performances from all concerned. Chilly and academic, thoroughly admirable but one step removed from the very real angst of a movie like "The Man in the Grey Flannel Suit" (1956)." MOTIVATION FOR ME TO SEE: To see Kate Winslet, one of my favorite actors, reunited with Leonardo DiCaprio. Also, I'm enjoying the "Mad Men" series, and director Sam Mendes made the great "American Beauty" (1999), both with a similar time and place. MY THOUGHTS: Up until the end, I was wondering what all the fuss in various reviews was about, that the book of the same name by Richard Yates was much more brutal in how April and Frank verbally savage each other; that the screenplay, had taken many liberties - but Kate powerfully shows how her character April takes control in the only way she knows how. The book, and film, reflect on how often couples, and we as individuals, just have to endure. Many have come at this film after reading the book, and were disappointed. I'm doing it backwards, as I'm now putting the book on my request list. [New purchase by HCL]
