(2005) N/A (N/A) (0) and dreamless * * * * "See my profile for the key to this code" * * * * SYNOPSIS: "A young Argentinian girl, 9-year-old Eugenia, must carry the burdens of the adults in her life--including her pregnant, drug-addicted mother, Florencia--in this earthy, emotional drama set against the nations economic collapse. Living a seemingly colorful life surrounded by eclectic neighbors and an offbeat collection of family, Eugenia has to grow up fast as she takes care of her mother, now pregnant (again) by an unknown father." CONSENSUS: "Co-directors Vera Fogwill and Martin Desalvo make a noteworthy feature film bow, laced with humor and high drama. Although there are occasional lapses into convention with some supporting characters, the main storyline remains honestly down-to-earth." MOTIVATION FOR ME TO SEE: A bicycle expedition to South America included Argentina in 1979, a time of hyper-inflation (nothing new) and the Falkland war crisis, and had just followed a military crackdown on leftists (the "disappeared"). I am hoping to relive some of those experiences when I view the film. MY THOUGHTS: Outdoor scenes were minimal, so the film didn't work to remind me of northern Argentina. The film makes comments on the economic crisis and the impact on the middle class of 1999, with some parallels to our current economic crisis. Economic crises can change people's lifestyles bigtime, but this crack-addicted mother would have been the same, economic upheaval or not. The complex ending is well done, but overall, except for nine year old Eugenia, the other characters left me flat. Also, it's supposed to be partly a comedy, but I didn't find myself laughing.
