This should be a better movie than novel because the pace is excruciatingly slow to the point of boredom. 3 of 10 stars

Yes the pace is very slow, but I think that is intentional on the author’s part. He is creating a world where yes, it’s a sci fi fantasy, but it’s still full of practical problems and no one can just "beam you up" to solve it. I found the politics of this author (apparently represented in the conservative/libertarian views of the main character) to be be more troubling than the pace. He seems to have a real disdain for all government or anything that smacks of soft-heartedness or compassion that might translate into a government program. However, the provocative, extreme freedom of the entrepeneurial world that opens up when humans come into contact with starfaring aliens is exhilarating. And he does call into question the potentially disastrous consequences for the powerless many that can result from the unrestricted actions of the very wealthy few. The story line is hugely fun. This rates as a "guilty pleasure" for me!
