This was a great read (especially after reading the Lord of the Rings). I did a little research into the book's history, and it turns out this is Tolkiens first book (and his last: it was published posthumously)! The Silmarillion gives backround info about the legends of Middle-Earth, and tells the story of the Elves, the greatest race in Middle-earth. The bad thing is that his son did not do a large amount of editing or revising; the book is very long and gets bogged down several times. Recommended to Tolkien fans, but beware, only read this book if your willing to stay in for the long run. At times, reading this book was like reading a history textbook.

This was a great book for anyone interested in the Lord of the Rings. It gives a lot of backround info. and explians a lot of the references that the characters make in the Lord of the Rings. Excellent read.
