It’s a good book! Scenes which otherwise might seem dull and distasteful are conveyed as full of life, humor, and beauty. And it’s full of historical information too.

I judged this book by its cover, I was wrong, and I still won. The book would have been good enough if it had described modern life on a northern Minnesota Indian reservation, but the author reaches further. David Treuer helped me to see Indian (a term which he prefers to "Native American") history through new eyes. Into the great span of European settlement and into current, local issues such as fishing and casinos, he weaves the story of his family and the Dakota people.
