In this many-layered novel, Louise Erdrich tells the story of Joe, a 13-year-old boy whose life is shattered when his mother is brutally raped and beaten. He seeks to find out who the attacker is and soon the identity of the culprit becomes apparent but due to jurisdiction problems, he remains free. Joe decides to mete out his own punishment. The book is a true coming of age story with sexual awakening, experimentation with drinking and smoking, separation from family and closeness to friends and is liberally salted with wonderful characters and stories of reservation life. Spellbinding. Is being compared with To Kill a Mockingbird. National Book Award winner.
