What if everyone in the country was blind?? This is a great book for bookclubs. It's hard to get used to the grammar; quotation marks aren't used and a single sentence can go on for an entire page (I'm guessing it's related to the Portuguese translation). Nevertheless, it's a haunting and compelling read. Highly recommended.

This provocative, chilling novel explores what happens when a large percentage of a city's inhabitants are suddenly struck blind. Reminiscent both of Camus's *The Plague* and Golding's *Lord of the Flies*, but perhaps more immediate for featuring a married couple's (one blinded, one not) struggle at its center.

To me this book is a great probe into the ideas and emotions of how I would fair if this happen to me. The story trapped me in and I was happy and sad to finish reading it. Over the years I have recommend this to many of my friends.

This book is very good and one of those that makes you think "What would I do in this situation?" However, the translation is a bit awkward. Trying to convey subtle meanings, the text gets weighed down. Also, there is an over abundance of using an idiomatic expression and then discussing the relevance or accuracy of it....almost once per page...gets a bit annoying.
