Standing in the rainbow
Flagg, Fannie.
The characters in this book come alive and you really do care about them. For anyone who grew up in a small town, or anyone who didn't! Great vacation reading.

Last days of summer : a novel
Kluger, Steve.
This is one of very few books I have read several times over. Told entirely through letters, telegrams and newspaper articles, you'll love the main character and be charmed by the others. So real, I kept thinking it couldn't be fiction.

Fall on your knees
MacDonald, Ann-Marie, 1958-
If you loved The Shipping News, you'll love this book. It vividly paints life on Cape Breton Island off Nova Scotia, and the mystery will keep you reading. I couldn't put this one down.
Adult Fiction MACDONALD

The book thief
Zusak, Markus
Told from the perspective of Death, the language in this book is so delicious, be sure to savor every word. Interesting to read a novel about WWII Germany told from the perspective of poor, non-Jewish Germans just trying to survive the war while still remaining in touch with their humanity. Don't rush through it, much as you may want to!
