books for the lazy, but enthusiastic, gardener
| I love planning a beautiful flower garden, almost as much as watching it grow in the warm enough months. Mulch is my friend. Thank goodness, because I might forget to water every so often. And I've been know to buy a plant because it's pretty, not because it will actually thrive in my yard. (Poor plants.) And, alas, I may be the only gardener in MInnesota who can't grow astilbe. *sigh* | Print this list

Shade gardening
Kellum, Jo
This was the first garden book I ever purchased. At the time my yard was 100% shaded. It helped me make some good choices for plants, and the pictures were perfect for my novice self. That year I planted Ajuga, Spiderwort, deadnettle, and astilbe. Everything thrived, except the astilbe.

Minnesota gardener's guide
Myers, Melinda
My copy of this book is water damaged, a little bit muddy, scribbled in (I note plants that do and don't work in my yard), and when we bought our house three years ago, this book was essential in identifying plants and bushes. I love Ms. Myers candid notes about plants that won't thrive (some of the vines), it's helped me make smarter choices for my garden. Though I still can't get astilbe to grow to save my life.
