The impossible knife of memory
Anderson, Laurie Halse.
Anderson is a master of writing realistic fiction of teens dealing with difficult issues. Anderson took on sexual assault with her award-winning "Speak" and eating disorders in "Wintergirls" In this book, the main character is coping with her veteran father's PTSD and resulting alcoholism. Memory, as the title indicates, is a reoccurring theme as Haley suppresses and rewrites painful childhood memories and her father is unable to contain and manage his memories of war. This is not a book with a happily ever after ending, but there is hope! And a boy. - Karen H.

I like this book because it dispels the convenient fantasy that Mumbai Slumdogs can become instant millionaires. Sunil Malhotra gives realistic voices to the real people in the audio version of this non-fiction book. - Michal

Will Grayson, Will Grayson
Green, John, 1977-
This teen fiction centers around two Chicago area high school students, both named Will Grayson. The co-authors employ an interesting device, each writing alternating chapters in the 1st person, each personifying different Will Graysons. Will Grayson 1 is straight, but finds himself on the outs at school after defending the loud and fabulously gay football player Tiny Cooper. Will Grayson 2 is gay and heartbroken by an internet love interest. The two Will Graysons meet and both find themselves sucked into Tiny's big, bold, gay tornado. The climax of the book occurs at Tiny's autobiographical school musical, of course. - Karen

Apollyon rising 2012 : the lost symbol found and the final mystery of the Great
Horn, Thomas R.
This book made me sad, angry and disappointed. Humanity has missed yet another opportunity to annihilate itself. This author promised that "unprecedented global upheaval" & "apocalyptica" would occur in December, 2012.Here we are, one year later, I still have to get up in the morning, my breath still smells like dead fish, and it's still cold outside. I want 33.33% of my money back, delivered in tri-folded $20 bills. - Michal.

Two boys kissing [sound recording]
Levithan, David.
This centers around Craig and Harry, ex-boyfriends and "two boys kissing" to break the world record for longest kiss. The author employs an interesting narration technique: the book is written from the perspective of deceased gay man of the AIDS generation, marveling at the progress that has been made, and rooting for those still struggling. Ultimately, I found the narration a little too precious, especially when read by the author on the audiobook. - Karen H.

Sotomayor relates the unvarnished story of her growing up in the Bronx in the 60's & 70s. Raised in a loving but sometimes dysfunctional extended family by a motivated but emotionally injured mother, Sotomayor shares the roots that gave her the drive and self-belief to one day become the first Latina on the Supreme Court of the United States.
