10. Librarians help locate appropriate research materials so remind students that they can go to the Information Desk and ask for assistance. (Don't worry, librarians don't do homework. Instead we encourage students to become information literate.)

9. Remind students to plan ahead. Library materials may not be at their library the day they visit. It takes 3-5 days to send an item if a copy is checked in somewhere else. Encourage students to get a library card! They will need it to check out materials and also to access the library's online databases from home or school. Any Minnesota resident can register their library card with us.

8. Show students the Hennepin County Library online catalog to find books and other materials. They can do some of their research from home or school. Want help showing your students the catalog? Contact us to set up a free presentation (contact information below).

7. Show students the TeenLinks website. It is Hennepin County Library's website for teens with lots of great databases and websites for homework as well as for finding their next great read.

6. Encourage students to bring the written assignment sheet with them to the library. It is a great help for librarians as well as for students, who may have a hard time remembering or articulating their information needs.

5. Just like students need to plan ahead to be successful so do teachers. Spend a few minutes looking at the library in-house and online resources available for your assignments.

4. Resources change at the library. What was available before may no longer be available in the same format. Some reference materials may now only be available online.

3. Library databases are magazine, newspaper, and reference articles online. As reliable as a book and may be the only information available at the library, especially for very specific topics. Students who are told to use no online resources may be limited in what they can find.

2. Students need to know how to evaluate resources for accuracy, especially websites. Check out Toolbox for Teachers' Classroom Resources. There are student handouts explaining how to evaluate websites and what a database is. (www.hclib.org/ToolboxForTeachers)

1. Go to Toolbox for Teachers to get contact information for setting up free classroom visits and other important information about working with your public library. We all want students to be successful utilizing information, so thank you for all you do to help students have a successful and productive visit to the public library.

Toolbox for Teachers was created by Hennepin County Library's SWIFT Project.
