Volunteers work under the direction of paid staff to increase and improve quality library service to the public via volunteer participation.

The Hennepin County Library Board supports and values the contributions of each volunteer and volunteer task. The Board supports the Library's volunteer program by:
  • Establishing Library Board policy for the volunteer program

  • Endorsing volunteer program management principles including:

      - assessment of the need for volunteer staff as a practical resource for the Library in reaching its goals
      - program planning and development
      - development of written job descriptions and expectations
      - selection and training of paid staff supervisors
      - marketing and recruitment of qualified volunteer applicants
      - professional interviewing and screening of volunteers
      - appropriate training and role assignment
      - supervision and evaluation of volunteers
      - maintenance of volunteer personnel records
      - recognition of volunteer and paid staff efforts - program evaluation
