Fines

When an item is overdue, fines accrue each calendar day the item is out. Additional fees are assessed when materials are not returned. The policy outlines customer responsibilities and restrictions, and the schedule details the 2009 fees and fines. Here are the most common ones:

Type of overdue item Fine rate Maximum Fine

All children's and teen items, including VHS and DVD

$.05/calendar day

$1.00 (per item)

All adult items, including VHS and DVD

$.30/calendar day

$6.00 (per item)

A non-refundable fee will be charged for items that have not been returned and are overdue more than 20 days. The fee is based on the average cost for items of that kind, not the exact cost of a particular item. If you think the item may be found, the Library recommends you look again for the item before paying the non-refundable fee. Hennepin County Library does not accept customer purchased replacements.

Borrowing privileges will be restricted when fine balances reach $10. Limited borrowing privileges (two items) will be extended if the fine balance is $10 to $49.99 and the customer pays 20% of the total fine due.

Managing and paying your fees and fines:

  • Log onto My Account and determine what fees and fines have been charged to your library card.
  • Fees and fines may be paid by cash or check in person.  If the balance is $2.00 or more, fees and fines may be paid in person or online by logging into My Account and clicking the Pay Online button.
  • Fees and fines of all types remain on customer accounts until paid.

Lost/stolen cards

  • Borrowers are responsible for materials borrowed on their cards.
  • Report a lost or stolen card immediately by calling your local library.
  • Replacement cards are $1.00.

Incomplete Returns

  • Customers will be contacted if an item they borrowed was returned incomplete.
  • The piece must be returned within six weeks of the contact.
  • A nonrefundable service fee will be charged for items not returned.

Thank you for taking good care of library resources and helping to make them available to others.
