The following unified lending rules take effect June 29, 2009 unless otherwise noted (*).
Loan periods
- Most library material may be borrowed for 3 weeks (21 days).
- The loan period for DVDs and video cassettes is 1 week (7 days).
- Bestseller Express (BSX) titles may be checked out for 10 days ($3 fee).
- Loan periods are longer for Children’s Readmobile, At Home, and Deposit Collection services.
- Reference material cannot be checked out.
Renewing library material
- Most library material, unless it is requested by another customer, may be renewed to extend the loan period up to 3 times.
- Bestseller Express titles, interlibrary loans, puppets and museum passes cannot be renewed.
- Customers may renew library material by telephone, online, or in person. Note: the renewal line number will change for Minneapolis customers when the catalog migration is completed.*
Limits on the number of items checked out at any given time
- Most customers may have up to 100 items checked out at any given time. All formats (books, DVDs, CDs, etc.) contribute to this total
- Customers are limited to one museum pass at a time.
- Customers with blocks on their library card (e.g. fines and fees, address verification needed) may be limited in the number of items that can be checked out.
Requesting library material
- Customers may have up to 100 items on request at a time
- Customers are notified that their request is available and being held for them.
- Customers may choose the method by which they are notified: phone (default), email, or postal mail.*
- Requests are held for 8 days. If the pickup location is closed on the 8th day, the hold expiration date is advanced to the next open date*
- Bestseller Express titles, museum passes, board books, puppets, comics, browsers, and any other general title record items cannot be requested.
Overdue notices, fines and fees
- Customers will receive up to 4 notices via phone, email or postal mail. (Method chosen by customer.)*
- 1st notice: sent on the 7th day after an item is due
- 2nd notice: sent 7 days after 1st notice sent
- 3rd notice: sent 7 days after 2nd notice sent
- Final: sent 7 days after 3rd notice; lost date.
- Customers may opt in to have a courtesy “due soon notice” emailed to them. The number of days the message is sent prior to due date is set by customer in "My Account."*
- Fines and Fees are governed by the Fee and Fine Policy and Schedule.
* Current procedures remain in place at Minneapolis libraries until the catalog migration is completed—scheduled for the end August 2009.
