LEARN HOW TO MAKE GREEN CLEANING PRODUCTS AT FREE HENNEPIN COUNTY LIBRARY WORKSHOPS THIS FALL
Commercial household cleaning products can be expensive, harsh, and contain chemicals associated with environmental and health concerns. You can learn how to easily make all-natural, less costly versions of household cleaning products using non-toxic, everyday ingredients at “Library Laboratory: Make Green Cleaning Products” workshops at Hennepin County libraries this fall. Eight workshops will be presented in September and October. Advance registration is required.

“The purpose of ‘Library Laboratory’ programs is to offer hands-on workshops for adults where they can learn something new,” said Johannah Genett, Hennepin County Library programming librarian. “The ‘Make Green Cleaning Products’ workshops will inform patrons about their cleaning product options, provide information about environmentally-friendly choices, and offer the opportunity to create thrifty, homemade items. ”

Instructor Mary Jo Rasmussen will talk about the chemicals contained in most commercial cleaning products and their possible effects. Workshop participants will make a general, all-purpose green cleaner that can be used in the kitchen, bathroom, etc., and a green scrubbing cleanser for more stubborn stains. Participants also will take home a spray bottle of the cleaner and a jar of the scrub that they made, plus a packet of recipes for the cleansers, other green cleaning ideas, and information on commercial products to determine which ones are less toxic.

With business partner Kelly Smeltzer, Rasmussen teaches cooking classes as a small business known as Urban Relish and recently added classes on making green cleaning products to their Urban Relish repertoire.

Health issues generated their interest in green cleaning products, especially products made at home using ingredients commonly found in homes. After extensive research, they created their own very effective green cleaners.

“We use ingredients that most people already have around their homes, such as vinegar and baking soda,” Rasmussen said. “They are not only less toxic than commercial cleaning products, but also inexpensive and easy to make. The most expensive ingredient in any of our products is the essential oils that we use to give them a pleasant scent.”

They do not sell the products at retail.
