Closing Event Begins at 10:30 a.m.
Hennepin County Library – Walker, 2880 Hennepin Ave., Minneapolis, will close for new construction at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22. All area residents are invited to a closing event that begins at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 22.
Hennepin County Library Director Lois Thompson will offer welcoming remarks. Other speakers are Hennepin County Commissioner Gail Dorfman, City Council Member Meg Tuthill, Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board Commissioner Anita Tabb, and Library Board President Jill Joseph. Commissioner Dorfman will present a special “Family Storytime” to celebrate the forthcoming new library. Architects from VJAA (Vincent James Associates Architects) will present highlights of this much-anticipated project and be available to answer questions.
The current library will be demolished and a new library will be built on the existing site. Some underground supporting structure will be retained and used in the foundation for the new library. The “LIBRARY” letter sculpture will be removed, stored, and reinstalled on a wall on the west side of the property when the new library is completed.
The new library will open in 2014 and will be about 31,000 square feet. Generous use of glass will provide natural light and visual connections to Hennepin and Lagoon Avenues and The Mall. The library’s collections, reading area and technology will all be located on one level, at street level, within a lofty two-story space. The main entrance will face Hennepin Avenue. A lower level parking garage will provide 24 parking spaces for library patrons and staff. Vehicles will access the site from Lagoon Avenue and exit to The Mall. There will be ample bike parking.
Highlights of the new construction are an interactive early literacy area, a window seat in the children’s area for families to read together, a reading lounge that overlooks The Mall, more computers, a teen area with computers and space to collaborate, and gathering spaces including a study room, a small meeting room and a multipurpose room that will open into the children’s area.
While the library is closed, patrons may use any other Hennepin County libraries. Nearby libraries are Hennepin County Library – East Lake(2727 E. Lake St.), Hennepin County Library – Franklin(1314 E. Franklin Ave.), Hennepin County Library – Hosmer(347 E. 36th St.), Hennepin County Library – Linden Hills(2900 W. 43rd St.), Hennepin County Library – Minneapolis Central(300 Nicollet Mall), and Hennepin County Library – Washburn(5244 Lyndale Ave. S.).
Patrons may designate an alternate pick-up location for their requests for books and other materials until Sept. 7. Patrons who do not designate an alternate pick-up location by Sept. 7 will have their requests automatically sent to Minneapolis Central Library.
While the library is closed for construction, books and other materials may be returned to any Hennepin County library or metro area library.
