OLDER ADULTS CAN LEARN COMPUTER BASICS AT 16 FREE ‘SENIOR SURF DAY’ CLASSES AT HENNEPIN COUNTY LIBRARIES THIS FALL
Adults age 55+ with little or no experience using computers can get hands-on experience learning computer basics, including how to navigate and search the Internet and access websites of interest to seniors, at 16 free “Senior Surf Day” classes this fall at Hennepin County libraries. Advance registration is required.

The programs are presented in collaboration with the Minnesota Board on Aging and the Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging.

Learning to use a computer is easier than you think it is. In the two-hour classes, participants will become familiar with using the mouse, keyboard, and desktop plus learn the basics of surfing the Internet. Adults also will learn how to access useful websites, including health websites such as Minnesotahelp.info, Medicare.gov, and other interesting websites.

“The Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging coordinates ‘Senior Surf Day’ classes throughout the metro area for seniors and caregivers,” said Joy Vliem, volunteer coordinator at the Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging. “When leaving the two-hour class, participants will understand some of what their children, grandchildren, and neighbor kids are talking about!”

“’Senior Surf Day’ volunteers come from all different backgrounds,” Vliem said. “What distinguishes them as instructors is their commitment to helping older adults learn more about computers and develop a working knowledge of the Internet.”

Volunteer John Guhl, for example, has taught classes at the East Lake and Nokomis libraries this year. He says his students age 50 and up wanted to learn how to use computers for various reasons, such as hobbies and interests, for recipes, or just information in general. Some have been prompted by their children to attend the class. Many are delighted by the opportunity to use computers at libraries. And they’re often surprised that computers are so easy to use.

He recalled one senior who was a disabled American veteran who wanted to learn how to access information about the Veterans Administration and support services, but he said many participants don’t have a specific need, they simply want to learn how to use computers to be more connected.

Six “Senior Surf Day” sessions are scheduled in September, five in October, and five in November. Register online or by calling the libraries. Following are the September sessions.
