Acclaimed Documentary Film ‘Dakota 38,’ Panel Discussion at Hennepin County Library – Minneapolis Central on Oct. 3
A special showing of the acclaimed documentary film, “Dakota 38,” the story of an annual sojourn on horseback that honors 38 Dakota warriors who were hanged in Minnesota in 1862, will be presented on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 7-9 p.m. in Pohlad Hall at Hennepin County Library – Minneapolis Central, 300 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis. Admission is free.
Filmmaker Silas Hagerty tells the story of spiritual leader Jim Miller and a group of Dakota Indians who each year ride 330 miles by horseback – from Lower Brule, S.D., to Mankato, Minn. -- to honor the victims of the largest mass execution in American history.
Dec. 26 marks the anniversary of the killing of 38 Dakota warriors in Mankato at the end of the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. Almost 150 years later, the pain and inhumanity of that mass execution still resonates among the Dakota people, whose ancestors warred with white settlers largely as victims of broken treaties, unfulfilled promises and mass starvation.
Following the film, a brief panel discussion will be led by the Star Tribune’s Curt Brown. The award-winning journalist wrote “In the Footsteps of Little Crow,” the newspaper’s recent six-part series about the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862.
Panel members include Elizabeth Baer, a professor of English at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn.; Sandee Geshick, a Dakota elder from Morton, Minn.; and Elitta Gouge, a Dakota elder from the Upper Sioux Community in Granite Falls, Minn.
The program is presented in collaboration with the City of Minneapolis and Minneapolis Public Schools in support of the annual "One Minneapolis, One Read" event.
