Hennepin County Library’s Seventh Annual Teen Job Fair Is March 23
Businesses, Organizations Can Sign Up Now to Participate in the Free Fair
Are you a business or organization looking for teen employees? Or are you a teen looking for a job? Hennepin County Library will hold its seventh annual Teen Job Fair on Saturday, March 23, noon-3 p.m. at Hennepin County Library – Minneapolis Central, 300 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis.
Businesses and organizations can sign up now to participate (no charge). The free fair is open to teens age 14 and up. Average attendance over the years has topped 1,000.
“Hennepin County Library’s Teen Job Fair offers businesses, organizations and teens an excellent opportunity to improve their employment outlook,” said Mike Opat, chair of the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners. “The fair is free and at one location, so it’s a very efficient way for local businesses and organizations to recruit young talent — and for teens to learn about potential employers and find a job or volunteer opportunity.”
Businesses and Organizations Invited
Any business or organization offering part-time, full-time, or seasonal paid positions; volunteer positions or internships; or job training or job search assistance is welcome to host a table. The fair is an opportunity to build community awareness of a business or organization as well as recruit new employees.
Rock Your Block, an online mobile app that helps teens ages 13-17 search for jobs, leverage their own networks, and build a virtual resume, participated in the 2012 Teen Job Fair. Caryn Evans, community outreach director, said, “As a new start-up company, we really appreciated talking to the teens directly and learning what [types of] job opportunities they were looking for. That information will help us to populate the job postings on our site with more attainable jobs for teens.
“We signed up 300-plus job-seeking teens on our website, getting us started with an ambitious group of job seekers,” Evans added. “We liked the fact that there was one centralized location to put the word out to many instead of having to travel to various places to reach the same number of people. That was an excellent way for Rock Your Block and many other companies to do some recruiting. Rock Your Block was able to network with other companies at the job fair as well.”
Exhibitors are provided with a six-foot table and chairs. There is free Wi-Fi at the library.
Businesses and organizations can sign up online at www.hclib.org/teenjobfairapplication or call event coordinator Cynthia Matthias at 612-543-8044.
Helping Teens Get a Job
In addition to offering teens opportunities to connect with potential employers, the Teen Job Fair also includes a workshop, “Get a Job Now.” Kate Trigger from Minneapolis Workforce Centers’ Youth Zone will give tips on finding and landing a job.
“Who We Hire,” a panel discussion by staff from businesses and organizations, will offer tips on completing job applications, interviewing skills and finding job leads. Members of the Minneapolis Youth Congress are facilitating the panel discussion.
Teens may bring a parent or guardian to the Teen Job Fair and a resume (if they have one). Some employers may be accepting applications or conducting job interviews, so casual business attire is recommended but not required.
Teens may use one of the many computers at Minneapolis Central Library to complete online job applications.
