Friends of the Plymouth Library Will Participate in World Book Night 2013 on April 23
Some 25,000 volunteers from Berkeley to Boston and Sitka to Sarasota will give away half a million free books in more than 6,000 towns and cities across the U.S. on April 23, World Book Night US. This year, for the first time, the Friends of the Plymouth Library will help distribute the books.
World Book Night was introduced in the United Kingdom and Ireland in 2011 to provide free books for adult readers, especially those who may not have access to books, and was launched in the U.S. in 2012.
The free books are special paperback editions of 30 titles selected for World Book Night by an independent panel of booksellers and librarians. World Book Night US is made possible through the generosity of the authors, publishers, book manufacturing companies, and other partners and sponsors. Bestselling authors Ann Patchett and James Patterson are this year’s honorary chairpersons.
Volunteers have already been selected for the 2013 distribution. Several members of the Friends of the Plymouth Library plus some library staff will be among the volunteers giving away World Book Night books in their communities. Some volunteers in Plymouth will be picking up their books at the Plymouth Library and sharing them in locations as diverse as senior residences, mass transit, nursing homes, food pantries and more.
“The staff and the Friends of the Plymouth Library are excited to promote the love of books and reading as the first Hennepin County library to participate in World Book Night US,” said librarian Trudy Hanus. “We look forward to giving away copies of our favorite books and hope to bring smiles to many faces on April 23.”
TheFriends of the Plymouth Library will hold a pre-World Book Night reception for the 2013 volunteers on Thursday, April 18, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Plymouth Library, 15700 36th Ave. N.  At the reception, the volunteers will pick up their books, meet other volunteers, exchange ideas and enjoy World Book Night videos and light refreshments. Hanus said that although the event is primarily for 2013 volunteers, anyone interested in participating in future World Book Nights is welcome.
