“Transmissions: Contemporary American Indian Art 2003-2013,” featuring artwork by prominent regional artists, is open now through Aug. 24 in Cargill Hall Gallery at Hennepin County Library – Minneapolis Central, 300 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis.
The exhibit features artwork by prominent regional artists such as Ahmoo Angeconeb, Frank Big Bear, Jim Denomie, Pat and Gage Kruse, Star Wallowing Bull and Francis Yellow, and includes drawings, collage works, paintings and sculpture. The artists have worked with a variety of materials including color pencil, acrylic, oil, ink, paper, canvas, birch bark and red willow. The Twin Cities is a growing center for contemporary American Indian art.
Cargill Hall Gallery hours are the same as the library’s: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday; 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; noon-5 p.m. Sunday.
On Thursday, Aug. 8, 6:30-7:45 p.m., acclaimed author David Martínez (Gila River Pima) will discuss works in the current Cargill Hall exhibit within the context of American Indian life today.
“The Indigenous artists featured in ‘Transmissions’ capture that spirit of resistance, demonstrating the diversity of personal visions and values, which derive from an equally diverse Indigenous community, which maintains a plurality of relationships with the world around them,” Martínez said.
His talk, entitled “The Land Tells Us Who We Are: Manifest Destiny and the Indigenous Aesthetics of Resistance,” will take place in Pohlad Hall at Minneapolis Central Library.
Both the exhibit and the event are free. They are presented in collaboration with Bockley Gallery, Minneapolis.
